How to keep your litter box fresh
When you bring a cat into your home, you gain an extra litter box to clean. For your cat, a clean litter box is just as serious a matter as it is for you. Just as you flush the toilet, your cat digs in the litter box. This gives them a clean and tidy feeling. And just like you, your cat definitely dislikes bad smells. All well and good, but for you, it's probably not your favorite chore. How do you keep the litter box cleverly clean? And how often should the litter box actually be cleaned? Here are our fresh tips.
Why are cats so particular about their litter box?
The fact that Puss wants a super clean toilet isn't to put you to work (not this time)! It's because wild cats are naturally both hunter and prey. A cat therefore doesn't want to leave any traces. Both in and outside the litter box, a cat buries its faeces. In addition, cats smell much better than we do. A dirty litter box feels to your cat as if they have to stay in the middle of their own scent. That goes against their instinct.
How often should you scoop the litter box?
Many cat owners wonder how often the litter box actually needs to be maintained. We understand that. We don't always feel like cleaning either. However, it's best to scoop urine and faeces from the litter box daily. This is best for your cat's comfort and for you, as it prevents unpleasant odours.
Cleaning once a day is a guideline. Perhaps you have multiple cats, a large cat, or a cat with more odorous faeces. In that case, you'll need to scoop the litter box more often.
Completely changing the litter box: how often is this necessary?
Replacing the litter and thoroughly cleaning the box is necessary approximately every 3 to 4 weeks if you use good quality clumping cat litter. For non-clumping litter, it's best to empty the litter box weekly. Using a clumping cat litter therefore saves you a lot of work. You can then read or Netflix longer with your cat on the couch!
Cleaning the litter box: tips if you have multiple cats
If you have several feline friends, you'll need to clean more frequently. To ensure the litter box doesn't get dirty too quickly, the general rule is that each cat should have its own litter box. This is more hygienic and gives your noble housemates a sense of control. Furthermore, to be quite honest: most cats don't like to share.
The litter box smells quickly: what can I do?
Normally, you shouldn't be able to smell that you have one or more cats. However, it can happen that the litter box, well... starts to smell. A smelly litter box can have several causes:
- The cat litter doesn't absorb sufficiently.
- The charcoal filter on top of the litter box is saturated: it needs to be replaced.
- The litter box is in a poorly ventilated area.
- The litter box is old, so dirt and odours remain in the scratches.
- Your cat has cystitis or diarrhoea.
- Your litter box needs a thorough cleaning.
If your litter box smells, it's usually easy to fix. It's important that you address this, otherwise your cat might not want to use the litter box anymore.
Cleaning the litter box: what is the best cat litter?
Choosing the right cat litter eliminates many inconveniences for your demanding friend. And for you too! First of all, the litter's texture and scent must be pleasant for your cat. They must be able to dig in it comfortably with their paws. In addition, good absorption is important, as this will prevent the litter box from smelling as quickly.
You are the one who keeps the litter box clean. It's always nice if the litter isn't too dusty and you don't have to lug around such a heavy bag. If the litter forms clumps, you'll need to change the entire litter box less often. This is precisely why we at Hoopo developed Tofu cat litter. Tofu is plant-based, lightweight, and quickly forms clumps. Moreover, the scent is neutral and fresh.
What exactly is Tofu cat litter?
Tofu is a different cat litter than you might be used to, but in a good way. Tofu cat litter consists, as the name suggests, of tofu. That makes it nice and light and environmentally friendly. Moreover, this plant-based litter produces little to no dust, making it easy to scoop clean. The rapid clumping ensures good hygiene. Your litter box stays fresher more easily! The pellets of our Tofu cat litter look somewhat like sprinkles. Yet they are wonderfully soft for cat paws. In addition, we have several variants for your cat's toilet. So they walk on clouds in their litter box. Below you will find our smartest Tofu tips.
How do I get my cat used to Tofu?
Curious about the fresh and sustainable Tofu experience? Then it's smart to gradually mix the new litter with the original cat litter. If your cat remains happy and so do you, you can fully switch to Tofu.
Gradually mixing is the smartest way to consult with your friend about what he/she thinks of it.
How do you clean the litter box with Tofu as filling?
A big advantage of Tofu cat litter is that it clumps quickly and is sustainable in use. You don't have to refill the litter as quickly. Due to Tofu's light weight, you also no longer have to lug heavy bags through your house.
You use Tofu pellets in the same way as other cat litter: a layer of about 7 cm that you scoop clean daily. Once a month, you change the entire litter box. The difference with other cat litter lies mainly in its sustainability, light weight, and limited dust formation. Bonus: you can even flush Tofu down the toilet!
