How does the Magna automatic litter box work?
If you’ve never had a fully automatic toilet for your cat, you may be wondering how the Magna works. It’s quite simple. After your cat has used the Magna, the litter box uses a rotating motion to separate dirty litter from clean litter. Clumps and feces end up in a reservoir with a waste bag. When the bag is full, you throw it away and insert a new one. To neutralize odors, the waste reservoir has a compartment for an odor tablet.

Set your preferences (and your cat’s) with the Hoopo app
Would you and your cat(s) prefer the Magna to clean after every visit, or once a day at a fixed time? You can decide entirely for yourselves. Simply set this in the Hoopo app, which you install on your phone. You install the app when you install the Magna. In the app, you create a profile for your cat(s) and enter their weight. You can then see how frequently and for how long they use the Magna. Other useful settings include:
- The do-not-disturb function when you need to pause the cleaning function.
- Child lock.
- The function that shakes the litter extra thoroughly (handy for larger litter granules).

Thoughtful design for optimum convenience
When designing the Magna, we faced a few interesting design challenges. Cats are sensitive and particular. If your cat doesn’t like something, it’s not easy to change its mind. That’s why the Magna is very spacious (XXL), yet has a low entrance. The entrance is also very open, so your cat doesn’t have to squeeze or contort itself.
In addition, many automatic litter boxes have one disadvantage: they are difficult to clean. Every self-cleaning litter box needs an occasional wash for hygiene. With many electric litter boxes, you can’t remove the drum, making cleaning more difficult. With the Magna, you can. Simply rinse the drum!
Safety
A slightly cheeky cat won’t politely wait until the Magna has finished cleaning. That’s why the automatic litter box is equipped with multiple weight sensors and anti-pinch protection. Does your cat touch the Magna while it is cleaning? The movement will stop. Even enthusiastic cable chewers have been taken into account: the cord is protected against your cat’s teeth.
Which cats is the Magna suitable for?
The Magna is suitable for any cat weighing 1.4 kg or more. Many automatic litter boxes are small in practice for large breeds such as the Maine Coon. The Magna is large enough for giant cats too. Your Siberian cat or Maine Coon won’t have to fold itself up when going to the toilet.
Can your kitten use the Magna?
The Magna uses motion sensors to detect whether there is a cat inside the unit. A kitten is not always detected by these motion sensors because they are as light as a feather. If you have a kitten, we recommend turning on the Magna manually by pressing the 'clean' button when the kittens are not nearby. Once your feline friend weighs 1.4 kg, they are heavy enough to activate the Magna fully automatically.

How to help your cat(s) get used to a smart litter box
As you may know, new objects in the home can be unsettling for your cat. Give your cat(s) plenty of time to get used to the Magna. Make sure your cat still has a familiar old litter box when you introduce the Magna. You can also use the Magna switched off during the first few days, which is much less frightening for your cat. It’s important to give your cat time to explore the self-cleaning litter box on its own. Give it that time.
Don’t place your cat on the Magna yourself, as that can have the opposite effect. Our honest and loving tip: don’t interfere. In the app, you can see whether and how often your cat uses the Magna.
Which cat litter is suitable for the Magna?
For good flow through the Magna, it’s important to have suitable cat litter at home. The litter must not contain coarse pellets (granules) and must form clumps quickly. Our recommendation for optimal operation of the automatic Magna litter box is a mix of 50% Tofu and 50% Tofu Fine. You can also choose only the Tofu Fine variant, but mixing is highly recommended. Other suitable options include clumping bentonite litter and almost all clumping litters.
Silica litter, wood pellets and non-clumping cat litter are not suitable for the Magna.
